Cherry Creek School District

The Cherry Creek School District Board of Education is set to consider a wide-ranging review of the district’s nutrition policy during its regular meeting Monday.

Cherry Creek Assistant Superintendent Scott Siegfried is scheduled to deliver the special report on food and nutrition during the Jan. 10 meeting. The presentation comes less than a month after President Barack Obama signed the “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010” into law. The federal legislation is designed to increase access to healthy food for low-income children, authorizing $4.5 billion in new funding for nutrition programs.

According to Cherry Creek’s Executive Director of Facility Support Rick Collier, Siegfried’s report will highlight the district’s current nutrition guidelines and compare them to requirements spelled out in the federal legislation.

“He’ll go through a presentation of what we are, how many meals we serve, then go into some prior federal regulations,” Collier said. “We have already adopted a variety of nutrition standards that are Colorado Department of Education requirements.”

Collier said the discussion will also include potential increases to food prices for students who do not qualify for free or reduced meals.

“They’re requiring that all districts, over time, raise their paid prices to match the federal reimbursements,” Collier said. “It could increase prices as much as 10 cents a year.”

Monday’s meeting is also set to include a presentation by Assistant Superintendant Eric Flor regarding Thinking Maps, a new instructional tool for teachers in the district.

The meeting is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Cottonwood Creek Elementary School, 11200 E. Orchard Ave. in Englewood.
